NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Nominations to Open for NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award
The NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award nomination process will open on January 30. The program will recognize 500 exceptional NJHS students each with a $500 award to be placed in a college savings account, program managed by OppenheimerFunds. Work with your principal to identify exceptional chapter members to give them a head start on college savings. Chapters can nominate as many members as they wish. Here is a link to a self-assessment form you can download and distribute to members you may consider nominating. The form is solely for your use in preparing the student’s nomination. Forms are not to be returned to the national office by the student or the adviser. The deadline for nominations is March 13. Recipients will be notified in the spring.
Reminder: NHS Scholarship Application Deadlines Weeks Away
Hopefully, your senior members have taken advantage of the opportunity to apply for an NHS Scholarship. A total of $1 million will be shared by 400 members! The application deadline for students is right around the corner: February 1. Adviser, principal, and faculty recommendations must be submitted by February 10. Please review the application instructions for the 2016-17 NHS Scholarship program and distribute the instructions to all eligible seniors and your school principal, if you haven’t already done so.
More Ways to Search for Scholarships
NHS members can also use a customized scholarship search tool, NHS Scholar Dollars, to assist them with efficiently identifying scholarships based on the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. A short how-to video is provided on the site to familiarize parents and students with the tool’s functions. Encourage your members and their parents to take advantage of this free utility today!
Share the Love with the Global Citizenship Student Leadership Initiative
We continue to seek entries for the #MakingGlobalChange Instagram contest. This is your chapter’s chance to show how members are making a difference with their involvement in the NASSP Student Leadership Initiative on Global Citizenship. Each month through the end of the year, one entry will be chosen and the entrant will be able to designate a $100 gift to a charity of choice in the name of the school or chapter. Let your members know, too, that we continue to seek students to register as global change ambassadors. These are individuals who would like to take a leadership role in a project and help get the word out about this significant movement involving more than one million students around the world. Thank you for sharing this information with them.
