GEARING UP

We hope your academic year is off to a great start. We know that many chapters are entering a season of change in their chapter leadership—whether due to new advisers or new officers assuming their positions. We extend a special welcome to all who are new to chapter leadership and hope that the resources provided here and elsewhere prove helpful in your transition.

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

NASSP Student Leadership Advisory Committee Seeks Members
Interested in helping shape student programs at the national level? Consider applying to become a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Student Leadership Advisory Committee. Committee membership will consist of students, advisers, and principals representing all of the NASSP student programs. There are three adviser committee member positions (two high school and one middle level). The goal of this committee is to engage student leaders in advocacy by creating a platform for student voice. Committee members will select and implement a nationwide initiative that is important to students and schools. To learn more about the duties of committee members or to apply, visit the online application.

National Principals Month Video Contest Underway
Remind your chapter members to pull out their smartphones and start recording—it’s time to tell the world how much their principal rocks. In celebration of National Principals Month in October, students are once again invited to submit a one- to two-minute video about their principal. Three winning entries will each receive a $200 Best Buy gift card, not to mention eternal YouTube fame. The deadline for submissions is October 31. Visit www.principalsmonth.org for entry instructions.

Share your Success
Often the best way for advisers and students to learn is from each other, so consider sharing your knowledge by presenting a workshop at one of three LEAD conferences this academic year. The first conference is in Phoenix, November 13-15. The deadline to submit a proposal is October 23. For details, visit the LEAD Conferences website.

Outstanding Volunteers Sought
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is the largest youth recognition program based solely on volunteer community service. Open to middle level and high school students, applicants are eligible for recognition at the local, state, and national level. State finalists will be invited to a four-day recognition event in Washington, D.C., in May 2016, where 10 of the honorees will be named national winners. Visit www.spirit.prudential.com to learn more and apply. The submission deadline is November 3, 2015.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH

Giving the Gift of Life
The NHS chapter and student council at Sioux City North High School in Sioux City, IA, sponsored four blood drives for the Siouxland Community Blood Bank. They also participated in the Summer Car Wash blood drive donor recruitment campaign, where each donor received a free car wash. Participating groups were required to wash cars on a Friday afternoon for four hours, and the chapter members washed cars and made lots of calls to eligible donors. The blood bank gives a $500 donation to the student group that has the most donors on the day of its car wash, and they won the contest with 58 donors signed up that day. The blood bank also provides each school that sponsors four blood drives a year with a scholarship to award in the spring. The chapter has been able to award three $1,000 scholarships to NHS members due to their blood drive sponsorship.

CHAPTERS DOING GREAT THINGS

NHS members at Cincinnati Christian in Cincinnati, OH, have demonstrated helping others in need, both locally and around the world. In spring 2014, they raised more than $15,000 via a 5K run/walk for Destiny Rescue, which rescues women and children from human trafficking. (Their goal was to raise $1,500—the cost of rescuing one victim.) In addition, they staged a spring carnival on campus, raising $1,600 for Project Mañana in the Dominican Republic, which serves, feeds, and educates children.

Do you have a recent NHS or NJHS project you’d like to see highlighted? Has your chapter been recognized in your local media? Tell us about it by emailing [email protected] or [email protected] with “Chapters Doing Great Things” in the subject line.

HONOR SOCIETY TIPS AND TOOLS

Transferring Active Membership. As a reminder, Honor Society membership does transfer automatically from each respective chapter (NJHS to NJHS and NHS to NHS). No student who has been inducted can be required to go through the selection process again. If you have members transferring to another school with an active NHS or NJHS chapter, please provide a letter of membership verification. Sample letters are available in the Adviser Resource Center of the NJHS and NHS website. Adhere to the national transfer policies outlined in the NHS and NJHS Constitution and handbooks and contact the national office at [email protected] or [email protected] if you have any questions.
