This month, student councils across the country are preparing for the 2016 NASC National Conference. Student leaders will descend upon Century High School in Hillsboro, OR, on June 24 for a one-of-a-kind experience.

Students and advisers will discover and explore how powerful their leadership skills are as they engage with each other in hands-on workshops and learn from inspiring speakers. Whether you’re joining us in Oregon or not, here’s how you can get involved.

Show Unbridled State and School Pride

Some states have NASC delegations and show off their state pride with matching T-shirts that they sport throughout the conference (and then trade on the last day with their new friends). Of course, all students and advisers want to rock their favorite council and school shirts. (Accessories often add an additional flair to ensembles, so don’t be afraid to bring your hats, sunglasses, bandanas, beads, and anything else to truly set yourself apart and show your pride.)

Learn from Peers and Make Lifelong Friends

The power of this conference comes from the fact that students get to meet leaders just like themselves. And they don’t just meet—they actively learn from each other’s unique experiences, grow as leaders, and bond through this fun yet informative weekend. It is our hope that students and advisers will keep in touch with their new friends and continue exchanging ideas and supporting each other through future endeavors. (It’s never too early to do some professional networking!)

Dig in to Leadership Topics

The NASC Conference throws attendees into deep conversations and activities to explore the full spectrum of leadership issues. Students and advisers are sure to take away valuable lessons on topics such as communication, engagement, student voice, activities, self-esteem, service, and technology that they can apply to their council leadership and carry outside school walls.

Can’t Make the Conference?

You can still connect with students and advisers on the ground in Oregon via social media with #NASCconf16. Share your council’s pride with the world by posting a picture of you and your students wearing your council or school gear, or write a message to your fellow NASC councils and hold it up in the picture. We encourage you and your students to tweet your questions and leadership tips to engage with fellow NASC councils. Plus, there will be more opportunities for you to educate your council on these key leadership topics, including the 2016–17 LEAD Conferences on leadership experience and development. Visit to get dates for the upcoming school year.

Be sure to stay tuned to and the NASC social media accounts for updates, pictures, and information about next year’s conference. Whether or not you’re able to attend this year, this is the annual event that your council doesn’t want to miss! —
