Juggling many roles and jobs can be stressful. But as educators and advisers, you know that leaders become stronger and more compassionate by taking on different roles and personas, especially in service to their students. This issue is about embracing the many roles advisers play and celebrating differences. Our “A Conversation With” column, featuring Shannon Anderson, highlights her Virtual Storytime project and how it uniquely brings together her passions as an educator plus her expertise in storytelling. We also have guest writer TaRael Kee, president-elect of the Illinois School Counselor Association and a national leader for diversity and equity with the American School Counselor Association, who shares the important role educators can play in fostering positive cultural conversations and examining one’s own implicit bias. Advisers help our most promising student leaders venture into new roles, too. Leina McLaughlin, a junior in Sherwood, OR, was encouraged by her adviser and mentors to share her passion for mental health awareness with the entire state of Oregon. And our celebration of 100 years of National Honor Society officially kicks off in these early months of 2021! You’ll find a special feature by our partner UNICEF USA, the fundraising arm for UNICEF’s worldwide efforts to support children and young people. I invite you to read about NHS students who have partnered with UNICEF to make an impact around the world. Surely, this is a sign of great things to come in this new year.
