NATIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP WEEK
April 19–25 is National Student Leadership Week (NSLW)! You are a perfect example of this year’s NSLW theme: The Power of One. Because of you—working alongside your chapter members—student leaders make a positive, significant difference in their schools and communities. We celebrate your contributions now and throughout the year. NHS and NJHS chapters would not accomplish all they do without strong, dedicated advisers, like you, providing guidance, sharing skills, and building motivation in students.

HONOR SOCIETY RESOURCES
State Associations
Last month, we highlighted the Honor Society Events calendar, featuring national and state events and conferences. Does your state have an Honor Society association? Are you interested in starting one? Visit our State Associations Directory for your state contacts for NHS or NJHS. CHAPTERS DOING GREAT THINGS
The NJHS chapter at Washington Middle School in St. Louis, MO, hosted a “Non-Slumber” Party for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and raised more than $5,400. (The chapter has raised well over $23,000 since 2007.) They also helped coordinate the Math-a-Thon at Blades Elementary School and tutored the elementary kids to help them complete their Math-a-Thon booklets, followed by a party with prizes. The 45 elementary students who participated raised approximately $1,000!
The NHS chapter at Calhoun School in Letohatchee, AL, raised funds to help one student in Belize further her educational pursuits. NHS adviser Cheryl Whetstone recently visited the country on a Fulbright Hayes Scholarship. She returned to tell her members about the challenges students in Belize face, since the government does not finance education beyond the eighth grade. NHS members raised $500 to donate to Productive Organization for Women in Action (POWA) to provide one semester of education for one member of the organization.
NATIONAL STUDENT PROJECT DATABASE
Warming Hands and Hearts. The NHS chapter at Marian Central Catholic High School in Woodstock, IL, collected over 1,000 winter clothing items including coats, hats, mittens, scarves, boots, and other warm clothing items for those in need in the Chicago area. Some 800 items were collected at Marian alone while seven area feeder schools contributed the remainder of the donations.
We Care, Brayden! The Lanham Christian School NHS chapter in Lanham, MD, came together in support of a local four-year-old boy with brain cancer who was being treated at a local hospital. For the project, members bought toys and created a huge get-well card to encourage the young patient.

POLICY HIGHLIGHT
Discipline and Dismissal
As the school year begins to wind down, the national office receives questions about member discipline and dismissal issues. Ensuring that the chapter is following the proper procedures helps eliminate issues arising from improper dismissals. As a reminder, the due process requirements can be found in Article 10 of the NHS and NJHS Constitutions. This procedure is national policy and applies to all Honor Society chapters. It defines due process as a right of membership. Local chapter bylaws should reflect this procedure as well. See the Discipline and Dismissal sections of the national handbooks for additional guidance and sample letters. Please review these procedures with your faculty council and principal, and feel free to email questions or a copy of your bylaws to [email protected] for a review to ensure compliance with national policies.
