HOW DID IT GET SO LATE SO SOON?
Dr. Seuss’ question seems timely and appropriate with the end of the calendar year quickly approaching. With many schools closing for winter and holiday break, we’d like to wish you all safe travels and an enjoyable time with family and friends.

PROJECT OF THE MONTH
Sole Hope
The NHS chapter at Rich South High School in Richton, Park, IL, is participating once again in Sole Hope, working together to provide material to cover the feet of Ugandan children. Sole Hope is a nonprofit combatting diseases that enter through the feet with the goal of creating “a positive physical and spiritual difference in the lives of individuals in impoverished communities.” The chapter held its first shoe party in January 2014, tracing and cutting out patterns on jeans and milk jugs, then assembling what would become one pair of shoes. Students worked on the project until May. Last year, the chapter was able to send 105 shoe sets. For more information, visit the National Student Project Database or the Sole Hope website.

Please share your chapter’s activities by uploading service project descriptions and photos to the National Student Project Database. It’s also where you might find your next great idea! Visit the project database on the NHS or NJHS website.

CHAPTERS DOING GREAT THINGS
Students in the NHS chapter at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, NC, volunteer each week at the Out of the Garden Project (OOTGP). Many Guilford County students get nourishment through the free and reduced price lunch program. At the end of each week, OOTGP sends backpacks of food home with the children so that they do not go hungry over the weekend. Once a week, Ragsdale NHS members visit the warehouse and fill the backpacks. The chapter has performed this service for the last three years.
The first-quarter NHS service project for Maine West High School in Des Plaines, IL, was Books for Africa (BFA). BFA distributes books and textbooks to students in Africa. NHS members decided to hold a competition among grade levels to see which grade could collect the most books. The NHS members collected and labeled boxes for the books and put them in social science classrooms. At the end of the competition, they’d collected more than 3,100 books. The chapter also raised money for shipping by asking local businesses and through a football game fundraiser.
Thanks to all of the advisers who are sending us items for Chapters Doing Great Things. We encourage all advisers to submit their projects on the National Student Project Database so that other chapters can learn about your chapter’s “great things.”
HONOR SOCIETY TIPS AND TOOLS
Adviser Resource Center: Have you visited the new online Adviser Resource Center (ARC)? Log in through the NHS or NJHS adviser section of the website and check out the new features and resources! You’ll find sample forms, customizable templates, documents, a manual for new advisers titled Adviser Basics, and much more. The ARC is designed for new and experienced advisers. You’ll even find some how-to videos on “Selecting Members” and “Discipline and Dismissal.” You may want to use the “Welcome to Honor Society” promotional video available under “New Chapters & New Advisers” at an induction ceremony, school assembly, or faculty meeting. (There’s a “Welcome to NHS” and “Welcome to NJHS” version.) Visit the center whether you’re brand new or need a refresher!
Checking Member Compliance: With the first half of the school year coming to an end, it’s a good time to review whether your members are meeting their membership obligations. This can include a review of members’ cumulative GPA, service hours, and other chapter obligations. This constitutional mandate does not have to be undertaken solely by the adviser, but it is the adviser’s responsibility to ensure members maintain their standards and meet all membership obligations. Once you’ve determined that all members are up-to-date, congratulate them for their continued excellence.
Reminder: Compliance checks should not to be confused with the selection process. There is no opportunity to “reapply,” and members cannot be removed from membership for not meeting member obligations without due process. Refer to the “Discipline and Dismissal” section of the NHS or NJHS Adviser Resource Center for references to Article X of the Constitution and national policies on the matter.
