Adviser of the Year Announced
Congratulations to Kelli Bradley of Mount Pleasant High School in Wilmington, DE, who has been selected as the recipient of the 2017 Rynearson National Adviser of the Year. Kelli has served as an NHS adviser for the past 11 years, earning the respect and appreciation of her students and principal. Learn more about her here.
NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award Recipients Announced
Thank you to all of the NJHS advisers who nominated members for the NJHS Outstanding Achievement Award. A total of 500 honorees have been selected to receive a $500 college savings award each, which will kick-start their savings for future success. Recipients’ families have been notified by mail and email, and NJHS advisers and principals have been sent a list of the recipients for their schools. NHS Scholarship Program Honorees Notified
A round of applause for the recipients of a 2016–17 NHS Scholarship. The national winner, Gavin Arneson of Clear Creek High School in Evergreen, CO, will attend NYU to study nursing in the fall. National finalists and semifinalists, their advisers, and their principals have been notified. The full list of this year’s recipients will be posted on the NHS website in June. Celebrating the Nation’s Top Volunteers
State honorees in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are now gathered in Washington, D.C., for national recognition activities. As part of the event, 10 students will be named national honorees as the top youth volunteers. This is the nation’s largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. NASSP, parent organization of NHS and NJHS, is a program sponsor. Learn more about the winners.

Save the Date—Virtual College Fair, May 25
NASSP will host a virtual college fair that gives every student in your school the opportunity to explore and interact with colleges nationwide. It’s a great time and cost saver in the college discovery process. The event takes place Thursday, May 25, from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. (ET)/11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (PT). Share this news with your counseling staff and encourage your entire student body (and their parents) to log on from any device and chat with college admission representatives. Even graduating seniors will find value in participating, since arrival tips will be shared for those preparing to matriculate to a chosen institution in the fall. College Application Essay Writing Workshops Available
A new college application season will soon commence. “The College Essay: First Steps” is the latest virtual college application essay writing workshop now available for NHS students to watch any time on demand. All of the virtual workshops are ready to watch throughout the summer. Suggest your NHS members take advantage of these sessions and lessen the stress associated with the essay writing exercise. Changing Advisers?
Will you be passing the baton as the NHS or NJHS chapter adviser when the school year ends? If so, please notify the national office by completing the online Adviser Change Form on the NHS or NJHS website. In addition, please be sure to direct the incoming adviser to the online Adviser Resource Center. Even veteran advisers should visit the center to become familiar with the resources available. Renew Before You Leave for Summer
Renewing your chapter is easier than ever. Advisers can renew online or download the renewal form to pay by check. A how-to video is also available to help advisers navigate the process to renew by credit card online. If you prefer to pay by check, you and your principal should have received a letter and invoice in the mail. Be sure to renew by June 30 for uninterrupted communication into the next school year.
